A Day in the Life of a Real Estate Agent: The Good, The Bad and The Funny

A Day in the Life of a Real Estate Agent: The Good, The Bad and The Funny

So you want to be a real estate agent, huh? You think it’s all about driving fancy cars, wearing designer suits and making big bucks? Well, think again. Being a real estate agent is not as glamorous as it seems on TV. It’s hard work, long hours and a lot of stress. But hey, it’s also fun, rewarding and NEVER boring. Here’s what a typical day in the life of a real estate agent looks like:

Morning: Check and reply to messages

The first thing you do in the morning is to check your phone and see how many messages you have. You hope it’s not too many, because that means trouble. Maybe someone backed out of a deal, maybe someone found a better offer, maybe someone wants to sue you. You never know what surprises await you in this business.

You reply to all the messages as fast as you can, trying to sound professional and polite, even when you want to scream or cry. You also check your email, voicemail and social media accounts, because you have to be everywhere at once. You are a real estate agent, after all. You have to be responsive and communicative, or else you’ll lose your clients and your reputation.

Morning: Schedule and prepare for appointments

After checking and replying to messages, you look at your calendar and see what appointments you have for the day. Maybe you have to show 10 properties in one day, maybe you have to drive from West End to East End, maybe you have to deal with difficult clients or agents. You never know what challenges await you in this business.

You schedule and prepare for your appointments as best as you can, trying to be organized and efficient, even when you feel overwhelmed or confused. You also prepare the paperwork and materials. You are a real estate agent, after all. You have to be prepared and knowledgeable, or else you’ll lose your clients and your credibility.

Afternoon: Show properties and meet with clients

Around the afternoon, when your clients have some free time, you start showing properties and meeting with them. You hope they like what they see, because that means money. Maybe they’ll fall in love with a property, maybe they’ll make an offer, maybe they’ll sign a contract. You never know!

You show properties and meet with clients as best as you can, trying to be friendly and persuasive, even when you feel tired or bored. You also advise your clients on various aspects of the buying or selling process, such as financing options, market trends, legal issues or negotiation strategies. You are a real estate agent, after all. You have to be helpful and trustworthy, or else you’ll lose your clients and your commission.

Evening: Follow up and research

In the evening, after finishing your appointments, you start following up with your clients and contacts. You hope they are happy with what they got, because that means referrals. Maybe they’ll give you a positive feedback, maybe they’ll recommend you to their friends or family, maybe they’ll write a testimonial for you. You never know what benefits await you.

You follow up with your clients and contacts as best as you can, trying to be grateful and courteous, even when you feel exhausted or annoyed. You also research new properties, leads or opportunities. You browse other websites to find new listings that match your clients’ criteria or interests.  You also create or update your marketing campaigns or materials to attract new clients or showcase your services. You are a real estate agent, after all. You have to be proactive and ambitious, or else you’ll lose your edge and your income.

As you can see, a day in the life of a real estate agent is full of variety, challenges and rewards. Real estate agents have the flexibility to create their own schedule and work at their own pace. They also have the opportunity to help people achieve their homeownership dreams and make a positive impact on their communities. But don’t be fooled by the glamour and the glory. Being a real estate agent is not for everyone. It takes a lot of skills and qualities that are not easy to come by, such as communication, negotiation, organization and problem-solving.
